For Joana Kruse, life is an ongoing photo adventure, best viewed through a lens – the Canon camera a constant extension of her arm. For over two decades, photography hasn’t just been a profession; it’s been the lens through which she experiences the world – an ongoing adventure from her adopted home on the rugged shores of northern Scotland to far-flung corners of Asia, Africa, and New Zealand. It’s a dedication reflected in her agency’s curated collection of 30,000 images.

Joana believes photography is fundamentally about storytelling. Her work captures the narrative of places and moments, gracing the pages of magazines, travel guides, countless book covers, and calendars worldwide. She confesses a particular fondness for dramatic landscapes – think brooding cliffs, tempestuous waves, and moody skies. Places like the Faroe Islands in this book, but also Norway, Iceland, and the Azores, alongside her beloved Scotland, call to her far more than sun-drenched beaches (though she has, perhaps ironically, spent time living in Italy and the Italian part of Switzerland).

Speaking English, Italian, and German, Joana frequently explores Europe in her trusty electric steed, her iconic Fiat 500e. When she does take a break, it’s usually in the kitchen. She is a passionate vegan chef who loves to cook and develop new recipes. Her dishes are praised (she hopes…) by both vegans and non-vegans and have been featured in photo-recipe calendars and cookbooks. She finds being creative in the kitchen is the perfect antidote to writing travel books and photo editing.
