[edit]I'd like to have Interface Admin to fix Dark Mode problems, the current interface admins didn't respond in a meaningful way for over a month on my two edit requests. My message in Admins noticeboard got ignored. And I want to fix multiple issues, and don't want it so take multiple years to fix them all. The Other Karma (talk) 07:22, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- Not possible without RfA. Please link the edit requests here. Krd 07:37, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- MediaWiki talk:Uploadtext/de – Wikimedia Commons thx, then ill apply there in the future. The Other Karma (talk) 07:46, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- I did not make any change because I wanted to find out why this interface message is not translated using translatewiki and using the same layout for every language. This page currently has totally different text for every language what is a problem for such a kind of guideline help page. GPSLeo (talk) 09:11, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- @GPSLeo: Sadly, that page is older than translatewiki, a legacy from the early days of Commons that needs an upgrade. Matrix has been doing good work on dark mode fixes. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:03, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- The question is how can we get this to be translated through translatewiki and in the same step using the same layout for all languages. GPSLeo (talk) 10:24, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- @GPSLeo: An IA TA would probably need to mark the main (English) version for translation, and then each language subpage listed here would probably need to be translated by Admins. Then there are special pages like MediaWiki:Uploadtext/bgfromflickr listed there which probably need treatment, too. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:01, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- Having it only translatable by admins would be huge problem. This is why I would like to use translatewiki. Maybe @Raymond can help how we can get this page to be translated on translatewiki. GPSLeo (talk) 11:07, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- @GPSLeo The message is translatable on translatewiki: see MediaWiki:Uploadtext/en and existing translations. But this message is wiki neutral. It is not possible to translate the special Commons message because ten of thousands of 3rd party wiki are using the same wiki neutral message. A WMF specific message could be added via a patch to Gerrit, so that this local message could be translated. Needs some thoughts and time. Raymond (talk) 11:43, 23 April 2025 (UTC)

- Would it work to just create something like MediaWiki:Uploadtext-commons and replace the MediaWiki:Uploadtext with {{MediaWiki:Uploadtext-commons}}? GPSLeo (talk) 12:16, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- @GPSLeo Probably. I suggest to test this on https://commons.wikimedia.beta.wmflabs.org/ Raymond (talk) 13:42, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- I tested it. Transclusion of a translated MediaWiki:Uploadtext-commons does not work and transcluding a Template:Uploadtext that is translated using the translate extension also does not work. I see the following options: 1. Keep the current technically totally independent translations and correct them locally (easiest option). 2. Change MediaWiki config in a way that commons does not use MediaWiki:Uploadtext at all and create a MediaWiki:Uploadtext-commons instead that the goes through translatewiki (best option for long term). Maintain the text on a page like Commons:Uploadtext and translate it there using the translate extension then copy it manually or by bot into the MediaWiki:Uploadtext/ pages. GPSLeo (talk) 15:50, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- I created a ticket for this. GPSLeo (talk) 09:51, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
- Which ticket is that? Krd 17:18, 30 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Krd: I am sure @GPSLeo meant a task. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 19:12, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

Dear administrators,
The annual competition Picture of the Year 2024 is actually running.
Due to high traffic and repeated vandalism (example from POTY 2023), a request for protection was made and granted.
However, it appears the protection given has gone too far as the following page was protected eventhough there was no request to protect it: Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2024/Gallery/Finalists/data.json
The problem is that on 27 September 2025 23:59:59 UTC, Ingenuity (who is not an admin on Commons) will need to create and maybe also edit this page to generate the finalists of the contest for round 2. But it is impossible for him to create this page right now because only admins can.
I contacted the admin that protected the page and he suggested to request the interface admin right on this page for Ingenuity on a temporary basis.
There are only 4 days left to have a way for Ingenuity to edit the red link above so this request is an emergency.
Ingenuity is a trusted user and sysop on english wikipedia with 86'000+ edits ([1]). He has given extremely precious help to the POTY Committee by organizing POTY 2023 and POTY 2024 and by recreating/fixing the whole script needed for it to work. I fully trust him to use the Interface admin right only for POTY.
I therefore kindly request that the Interface admin right is given to Ingenuity on a temporary basis, at least until the end of the round 2 of POTY so until 12 October 2025 23:59:59 UTC at least.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Kind regards,
-- Giles Laurent (talk) 19:10, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
- I personally see no way to achieve this within policy, and I'm hesitant to create a precedent per bureaucrat discretion without community support. I neither see an emergency here. Any feedback welcome. Krd 21:22, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
- @Ingenuity is trusted, and I'd personally support them having the right. ─ Aafī on Mobile (talk) 07:26, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
- What Aafi said, I'm of the opinion that crats have much more leeway with single purpose temporary right grants in emergency (like my account creator grant last year) this should be for 2 months and only be able to be used for POTY. All the Best -- Chuck Talk 15:34, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
- @Ingenuity is trusted, and I'd personally support them having the right. ─ Aafī on Mobile (talk) 07:26, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
- I am fine with granting Ingenuity temporary interface admin. Yann (talk) 20:10, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
- This would work, or we need an admin volunteer to help run the script tomorrow. Ingenuity (talk) 23:28, 25 September 2025 (UTC)
- I'd still prefer to let an admin do it, as a promotion without community approval is not within policy. If this is a regular (yearly) task, I think is may worth to create a RfA for this. Krd 08:04, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
- If an admin has to do it he has to commit to be available on all POTY UTC dates including this 27 September 2025 23:59:59 UTC and to have the technical knowledge to quickly fix any problems with the POTY js script and the POTY admin script.
- I therefore think that my original suggestion is easier and more efficient: to unprotect this page because there was no request to protect it and last year there was no problem with creating it because that page was not protected so I don't see why it should be protected before it's creation this year -- Giles Laurent (talk) 08:15, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
- Just a reminder: it was protected through MediaWiki:Titleblacklist.
- To unprotect it a # should be added in front of this line:
- Commons:Picture of the Year\/2024\/Gallery.*
- -- Giles Laurent (talk) 08:31, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
- I am not sure because of your explanation: Are changes in MediaWiki namespace needed to start the new POTY round tomorrow? If not I would remove the protection from MediaWiki:Titleblacklist and use regular protection for all pages where it is needed and leave the pages they need to be changed unprotected. GPSLeo (talk) 14:48, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
- Sorry if I wasn't clear. The only POTY file in the MediaWiki namespace is MediaWiki:POTY-gallery.js. This file doesn't need to be edited to start Round 2 (unless there's a new bug with the new features added that has not yet been discovered).
- To start Round 2, Ingenuity normally only needs to be able to create/edit these pages :
- Commons:Picture of the Year/2024/Gallery/Finalists/data.json (in any case)
- Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2024/Gallery/Finalists (eventually)
- Right now, these two pages can't be edited/created because of the way the protection was made on MediaWiki:Titleblacklist that is too broad.
- So protecting only the pages where it is needed would be perfect to solve the present situation.
- That being said, it would be nice if an admin could remove the first
#
in front of# Commons:Picture of the Year\/2024\/R1\/votes\/.* <noedit|errmsg=Protectedpagetext/PageProtected> # protect voting
but only at 28 September 2025 00:00:00 UTC (and not before this date and time or it will block votes too soon) to block new votes on round 1 candidates after the expiration of the R1 voting time. - If something still isn't clear please feel free to ask and thank you for your help -- Giles Laurent (talk) 18:52, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
- I created an abuse filter (Special:AbuseFilter/339) and replaced the blacklist entry with it. The filter has an exception for both of you. Please make some test edit to check if it works. GPSLeo (talk) 11:42, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
- Terrific! Thanks much for the help, it seems to work. Round 2 will be able to start :)
- Just a side note: I don't need to be in the Abuse filter (I'm not a POTY Committee member, just a volunteer helping to get things done), it's Ingenuity who's in charge of executing the POTY admin script (I just help checking if there's no bugs, etc.)
